For new playwrights, there is only community theatre by which to test their works. But few such theatre companies have the courage to take on anything more than the same old subjects, themes, and ideas, or in an effort to be original, plays that we can’t relate to. Oh, for the ilk of another Death of a Salesman or A Streetcar Named Desire or A Doll’s House in which we can understand the motivation of the characters in a story that keeps us asking what happens next. I’m sure there are such plays out there, but nowadays, sadly, there are few takers.
